Gua sha
Gua Sha is a traditional East Asian healing technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently “scrape” or glide along the skin. This process stimulates circulation, breaks up stagnation, and encourages the movement of lymph and qi (energy) throughout the body. Though it may sound intense, the technique is surprisingly soothing and leaves most people feeling lighter, looser, and deeply relaxed.
How It Works
By increasing blood flow to the muscles and tissues, Gua Sha helps relieve tension, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural healing responses. It is commonly used for neck and shoulder tightness, back pain, headaches, and stress, but it also supports immune health and recovery from colds by promoting circulation and clearing heat.
What to Expect
During treatment, a therapeutic oil or balm is applied, and a stainless steal tool is gently worked across areas of tension. The scraping may leave temporary red or purple marks called sha, which are not bruises but a sign that stagnant blood and energy are being released. These marks typically fade within a few days.
After the Appointment
Many patients feel an immediate sense of relief, improved range of motion, and reduced pain or stiffness. Some also notice better sleep, improved immunity, and a sense of overall relaxation. Gua Sha can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with acupuncture, cupping, or herbal medicine to deepen results.
Gua Sha is a simple yet powerful therapy that not only relieves physical discomfort but also restores flow and balance, leaving you refreshed inside and out.
